Independent Health's origins began in 1980 as a result of a University at Buffalo graduate school research project. The project's findings determined that our Western New York community could benefit from a health maintenance organization.
The groundwork was laid and Independent Health was born.
As one of Western New York's first HMOs, we initially provided service to 2,785 members. Today, Independent Health covers over 365,000 people here and across the country with more than 100 plans, services and products.
Our history has been marked by a commitment to change to meet the always evolving needs of the community we serve. And that history is also our future.
Acquisition and Expansion
We are constantly looking for ways to better serve our members. So to enhance our innovative and successful product portfolio, we've added services that help employers implement those products and manage their health care expenses.
In 2003, Independent Health acquired NOVA Healthcare Administrators Inc. to administer customized, self-funded benefit designs and reimbursement account management.
Pharmacy Benefits Dimensions was introduced in 2005 to provide employers with access to Independent Health's purchasing power and the ability to design utilization management strategies that align with their benefit objectives.
